Originally, candles were made from tallow, which was extracted from cattle & sheep, in the early Egyptian times. These early candles burned poorly & probably smelled even worst.
The first evident of a clay candle holder is found in Egypt around 400 b.c. Earthenware bowls from the 4th century AD in China had hollowed sockets with traces of partially burnt candles in them.
