Candle Safety Tips

  • Always use a candle holder specifically designed for candle use. Be sure the candleholder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. The candleholder should be heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep.

  • Never move a lighted candle especially a votive or container candle when the wax is liquid. Also, extinguish a pillar candle if the wax pool approached the outer edge.
  • If too much (or too little) air reaches the candle flame, it will disturb the flame, causing it to soot. To avoid this, always burn your candles in a well ventilated room and keep the burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, smoking and excessive dripping. Drafts can also blow lightweight curtains or papers into the flame where they could catch fire. Ceiling fans can also cause drafts.
  • If you like to group your candles together, make sure they are at least 2 to 3 inches apart when burning. Candles placed too closely together can create their own draft and cause the candles to flare.
  • Long or crooked wicks cause a candle flame to grow too long and flare,  thereby causing uneven burning and dripping. So that is why it is important to trim candlewicks to 1/4 inch each time before burning.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
  • Extinguish any candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly or the flame becomes too high. Cool, trim the wick, check for drafts and re-light.
  • Don’t allow the flame to come too close to the holder or container.
  • Discontinue using a candle when it is within 2 inches of the holder or ½ inch of the container bottom.
  • One of the safest ways to extinguish a candle is to use a candle snuffer, which helps prevent hot wax from spattering.
  • When blowing out a candle, hold your index finger in front of the flame and blow at it. Air will flow around your finger, extinguish the candle from both sides, and prevent hot wax from splattering.
  • Do not extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to spatter and can cause glass containers to break.
